Current Events...

Today in class we are going to be talking about the idea of Current Events. These are my ideas on the subject:
Everyone when signing up for classes, First Year Students will all sign up for the class called CURRENT EVENTS.
Class will meet 2wice a week
Students will take out a subscritption to newspaper
Class discussions will pertain to whatever they have been reading in the newspaper and how to be able to distinguish propaganda from real stories.
I think it would be cool to have someone come and talk to the students such as a reporter...so then they would be able to tell the students what the main part of the story is and how to distinguish it and how they go about getting their stories.
Maybe have students write a short paper every once and a while about a current event of their choice.
I think we should still have gathering Jamboree thing for all the students
I think each class would get to pick a certain current event and be able to present it however they feel neccesary.
Each class would have to present a different current event. To determine who picks first you could do like a lottery thing or something...
but thats all i got for right now....im sure in class we will have reached some more ideas and thoughts!

!!! Jamboree !!!

So Jamboree was exciting and not exciting at the same time. In class there seemed to be soo much hype and all this grandeur and pom about what the FYS Jamboree was supposed to be. It was a good time getting ready for Jamboree, I think our class definately had fun learning how to swing dance and it was a really cool idea that we had a live band playing. I think that added a little more to our performance. But it was sad that not very many people came to watch us dance or even would participate with us. I think I recall Michelle having to pull someone of their chair to come dance with us. But then again, we did have some people who were willing to learn, even though it may not have been the "cool thing" to do.
While Adam and I sat at the table (haha more like sat on the couch because of all the people at the booth) it didnt seem like very many people stopped by and talked to our table. I thought that was kind of depressing in itself. But then when I think about what I did, I wandered around and went to the booths but didn't really vocalize any questions or comments. I was soaking it up in my own accord.
I totally dont think they should call the Jamboree, Human Diversity. I think that was a lazy way to try to combine what everybody was learning.
Actually, I still am not quite sure what the point of FYS classes are. I enjoyed this class, but my roomate actually had a lot more papers to write than we had to do. As we mentioned in class I just dont see the "common experience" being present. I still dont see if this was like a learning experience to prepare you for your college classes, but if that was the point I believe it was lost....
