Current Events...

Today in class we are going to be talking about the idea of Current Events. These are my ideas on the subject:
Everyone when signing up for classes, First Year Students will all sign up for the class called CURRENT EVENTS.
Class will meet 2wice a week
Students will take out a subscritption to newspaper
Class discussions will pertain to whatever they have been reading in the newspaper and how to be able to distinguish propaganda from real stories.
I think it would be cool to have someone come and talk to the students such as a reporter...so then they would be able to tell the students what the main part of the story is and how to distinguish it and how they go about getting their stories.
Maybe have students write a short paper every once and a while about a current event of their choice.
I think we should still have gathering Jamboree thing for all the students
I think each class would get to pick a certain current event and be able to present it however they feel neccesary.
Each class would have to present a different current event. To determine who picks first you could do like a lottery thing or something...
but thats all i got for right now....im sure in class we will have reached some more ideas and thoughts!

!!! Jamboree !!!

So Jamboree was exciting and not exciting at the same time. In class there seemed to be soo much hype and all this grandeur and pom about what the FYS Jamboree was supposed to be. It was a good time getting ready for Jamboree, I think our class definately had fun learning how to swing dance and it was a really cool idea that we had a live band playing. I think that added a little more to our performance. But it was sad that not very many people came to watch us dance or even would participate with us. I think I recall Michelle having to pull someone of their chair to come dance with us. But then again, we did have some people who were willing to learn, even though it may not have been the "cool thing" to do.
While Adam and I sat at the table (haha more like sat on the couch because of all the people at the booth) it didnt seem like very many people stopped by and talked to our table. I thought that was kind of depressing in itself. But then when I think about what I did, I wandered around and went to the booths but didn't really vocalize any questions or comments. I was soaking it up in my own accord.
I totally dont think they should call the Jamboree, Human Diversity. I think that was a lazy way to try to combine what everybody was learning.
Actually, I still am not quite sure what the point of FYS classes are. I enjoyed this class, but my roomate actually had a lot more papers to write than we had to do. As we mentioned in class I just dont see the "common experience" being present. I still dont see if this was like a learning experience to prepare you for your college classes, but if that was the point I believe it was lost....

Discussion Summary( a little late..ok..well super late...)

So tonite I was reading over the course blog and discussion summary and realized that I completely missed my discussion summary. So I am attempting to ask for forgiveness and doing a little summarizing up...
So in our class there really hasnt been that much discussion other than practicing for our amazing jamboree performance. We have met in the Louie's Lower Level and practiced our dancing. We have decided to teach the sexual advance ( not asexual reproduction....ahemm...my bad) and some other simple inside outside turns. We also learned how to do the pretzel which is kind of an exciting dance move. We talked about recruiting people to help us teach the dance moves and have decided that we will not be dressing up.... sad... I think that we have improved a lot. The band also practiced while we danced our hearts out. They started out with one tune and then switched to another. We decided to do a music show and have people pick out two songs and bring them to class. People are also in charge of promoting our dancing extravaganza. The little discussion we have had that doesn't revolve around the Jamboree pertains to the music lists that we have been listening to. We discussed the religious songs and how some of them sounded semi-familiar such as we may have heard a cover of the song....
So I am completely sorry that I missed my date by ummm a couple or maybe more days...weeks... But that's all I got for my discussion summary. We really haven't talked a lot, but danced and played our way to prepare ourselves for Jamboree!!

Swing Dancing Adventures

So approximately one week ago Dan and I decided to venture to Swing dancing club.. I was a little skeptic at first but I have to admit it was some crazy good times!! Maybe for me and not for Dan..we learned how to do some lifts..which hurt Dan cuz I kind of wasnt doin it right....sorry!! But i did get a big ol pretty bruise from Dan too! but it was really cool and we learned how to do the cool pretzel dance move.. I was more excited for te lifts but I was really scared too.. WE had to do a trust excercise and I was kind of a chicken....i guess i dont really know why cuz im not always that scared...teehee
So anyways I think everyone should go to swing dancing especially if you are in the 12 o clock class so we dont really all look retareded when we dont know how to dance since thats what we are doin for our jamboree performance....

so i have officially been a slacker on this blogging....sorry!!!
Indianiapolis was amazing if anybody cares..we got 5th in the nation...oh yah baby!
but n-e-ways.. talkin about class....
I listened to some of the listening lists and i thought it was cool how there was a summary or a little blurb about the song and the background..that made it interesting for me
The book has been quite interesting for me..and how the old country singers all kind of knew each other...
For the jamboree I think we really need to get serious about practicing...cuz we dont want to be retarded lookin swing dancers!! but i love the idea of swing dancing... and i know ur not supposed to start the beginning of a sentence with a preposition but o well...

Ramblings

I am sitting my mind supposed to be focused on blogging for FYS but then my attention wanders to my window and i look out and am amzed by seeing the snow flurry sideways to the ground. I am not looking forward to walkin to class today! So I havent blogged for a while and decided I had better get on it!
I really have enjoyed all the performances that I have witnessed in our class. I was really impressed by Michelles Hobo performance. I thought it was really cool that she could use some information from her grandfather's memoirs to add a personal touch. I was also impressed with the ASL performance. I have only been around sign language when I mentored with a speech pathologist so that was really cool for me to see something like that.
The laast time I was on pandora I got attached to Brooks Williams. I like the acoustic guitar. Some of the songs I heard where Chasing the Grove and Baberloo. To me there is someinth soothing listening to guitar music without lyrices. Sometimes I think lyrics can complicate things. But i really like knowing the meaning of lyrics. I usually have to read the lyrics while I am listening to the song to fully appreciate it!
So I guess thats all I have for now!

Random Goodness

So.. for my presentation Jesh and I plan to cook a meal for all you guys... I think it will be amazing.... One of the things that suprises me in the book is that infidelity is such a prevolent subject in the book. Infidelity is mentioned in the songs and referenced in everday life. It kind of blows my mind that they didnt do anything about it. Like when the husbands would go away and then the "other men" would move in. I guess that was just the way of life and nothing could change it. I think it is also crazy how superstitious people are. With the whole mojo thing, I think it seriously ridicolous!!! I dont believe in the whole selling their soul to the devil to get amazing guitar playing skills. Well that is all I have for now

Blogging Summaryay

Well, Greenstar has decided that they want to do a song using sign language. They were in a ASL group in high school (even captain- yaa) That sounds amazing, kind of like a cooler version of the Napolean Dynomite song.
Ruby X has some thought provoking blogs. She has a couple quotes that tie nicely to what we have been discussing at class. Her performance idea has to do with a costume. I am pretty excited for the whole costume thing... I dont believe that earplugs will be neccesary Ruby X!
Culture Jammer is wondering whether to play the piano or to teach us some swing dancing moves. I would opt for the swing dancing lessons, I think it would be a riot!
Steph is going to teach the class some line dancing and relate it back to the kind of dancing that was prevelant in the cajun days. Steph also mentioned how she liked reading the second chapter better and that the first was semi confusing
Ashley's performance ideas seem to be going in every direction from the kazoo to the harmonica, to cooking.
Yeah talks about how the reading assignments were kind of long- I agree, but they were interesting and he found some names to put in his radio station on Pandora.
Brady is talking about in playing a short music clip to different people and getting their reactions . It sounds pretty cool and it will be intersting to see how people react to the music and how they define the genre.
So I am very distracted right now, and thats all I have for now. So I hope you enjoyed my summary. I probably didnt do it justice so it would be cool it u went and checked them out yourself!

one more thought... primitive...

I know this is a little late, but the word primitive is still in my head. Not in any means did I mean to bash the earlier cajun music. I simply used the word primitive because when I think about primitive I think about simpler times with simpler solutions etc. etc. I dont think the word primitive is like the scene from Space Oddessy 2001 where the apes go crazy banging the sticks around. being primitive is like having raw emotion. And actually i am the biggest fan of Dashboard Confessional, which is probably considered very primitive.

You cannot deny the fact though that the music did indeed change. Maybe the change was not what you as a listener wanted, but you cannot be oblivious to the fact that it did change. I dont think it neccesarily means that the newer music is better

Does it matter that the cajun music has changed over the years? I dont really know.. I just made a simple observation.. do what u wish...

Class Discussions

Well.... class discussions so far have been very intersting, we have some very opinionated people in our class. I believe that is a good thing because if u dont stand for something, you fall for everything right?>
all in all I thought the govenor's speech was not that impressive. I have heard very good speakers such as Baxter Black and State FFA officers retiring address and they did better than she did. On the emotional part... i kind of agree that i saw little or no tranisition, but i think she could not help that she cried... but then again, maybe the speech had not room for the crying, i am not sure though about that. I do know, that emotions will get the best of you. One of my good friends starting cryin in her speech about mentoring at the hospital and the stuff she witnessed. I am pretty sure she did not mean to cry, but it happened and it touched the audience. I wished to hear more about katrina because I personally have not heard anything from someone who was that involved with that particular disaster

My question for the governor would be: Do You feel as if you have political views that have not been expressed before you came to office, and if you do please elaborate

musical performance

I have played the clarinet since i was in 5th grade, i started taking private lessons on and off since 7th grade, i have been first chair in my band since 9th grade and have been selected for Tri-County honorband all 4 yrs of my high school. I was 1st chair my last year.
I have done music solos and have competed at district and state levels. I prefer to perform more modern songs such as Dance Preludes by Witold Lutoslawski.....I also sing a little bit in the privacy of the shower

new national anthem

that is a super hard question.. i would reccommend something patriotic full of patriotic meanings... thats all i got for this question

songs in relation to my family

that is a hard one, i cannot really pick any particular song to associate with my parents, my dad is a big jazz fan like Miles Davis, etc, my mom will listen to old rock and roll, but she will also listen to country.

top 5 songs

hmm... this is a hard one, any Tom Petty song from the album, Full Moon Fever, would be a definate winner, Eric Clapton's Tears of Heaven, Rufio's song, Angel Above Me (my favorite band ever!!!, thanks to the amazing Vans Warped Tour) Def Leppard, Pour Some Sugar on Me, and the last song I would like to take would be Ireland of Legend And Lore

Reasons for this class...

Cool, well i chose this class because I like all kinds of music, without music the world would be boring and dull and probably not as happy :)
